    Day 1 (6 Videos)

    1. LINK مکالمہ بلوچستان | قدیم آثار و تہذیب | Dr. Farzand on Balochistan's Ancient & Rich History

      Respondent: Dr. Abdul Rehman (USA)

      Moderator: Dr. Amjad Waheed

Dr Farzand Masih is Professor and Chair of History Department at FCCU.

In this session Dr. Farzand Masih gives an overview of the ancient, rich and comprehensive history of Balochistan, while lamenting over the fact that it's unique historical sites are the least studied and the least protected in Pakistan.

    2. LINK مکالمہ بلوچستان | مذہبی روایات | Dr. Barkat Kakar on Balochistan's Religious Traditions

'A misunderstood land' says Dr. Kakar, about Balochistan, almost half of Pakistan (geographically), standing between 'British Balochistan' and 'Riyasati Balochistan'. The pre-colonial Balochistan was a 'cross road' and various religions found root there: Hindu, Buddh Matt, Greco-Roman, Zoroastrians, Christians, and specifically the Zikri community of the Makran coast and the Hazara community who mass migrated to Balochistan in the late 1800s.

    3. LINK مکالمہ بلوچستان | تمدنی تنوع | Muhammad Ali Turani (Chairperson Hazargi Academy), Dr. Barkat Shah Kakar (UoB, Quetta), Dr. Sabir BadalKhan on Balochistan’s Cultures

Respondent: Fiaz Ahmad Khan, Moderator: Junaid Alam

Representing Balochistan's Baloch, Hazara and Pashtun identities - the esteemed speakers define culture, emphasize its linkages to livelihood, religion, region and tribal lineage in Balochistan (with Sibi as a particular example), and elucidate upon the particularities of the diverse ancient cultures of larger Balochistan, and the one carved into Pakistan. The effect of modern technologies is also discussed.

Dr. Sabir Badalkhan teaches at the Department of Asian, African and Mediterranean Studies at the University of Naples "L'Orientale" in Naples, Italy.

    4. LINK مکالمہ بلوچستان | سخن گوئی شاعری - دیگر ادبی اصناف | Balochistan's Oral Tradition - Dr. Barkat Kakar & Dr. Sabir Badalkhan

      Moderator: Dr. Jawad Hamdani

"Classifying Balochistan as predominantly 'rural' and 'nomadic' with approximately 10-12 per cent of the total population in urban settlements, Dr. Barkat Kakar says that most of Balochistan is still with its centuries-old oral tradition or 'shafahi riwayat', wisdom, 'tibb' and poetics. In stark contrast, he says the modern schooling institution carries 'its own agenda and culture' which obliterates such wisdom and poetic creativity. Dr. Kakar praises the 'bhandar' poetic tradition, and further adds that social media however is an aid in keeping the poetic tradition alive.

Dr. Sabir Badalkhan says that Balochistan is between illiteracy and the oral tradition with the dismal state of government educational institutions. He also mentions the rich folkloric tradition of Balochistan - epics, ballads, songs, proverbs, games, riddles - as universal, collective wisdom. "

    5. LINK مکالمہ بلوچستان | قصہ گویان | Danish Baloch on Qissa Goyan Storytellers - Respondents: Khadija Khosa & Dr. Jawad Hamdani

    Moderator: Qazi Azmat Isa

"Danish Baloch - representing Balochistan's Baloch identity - introduces the پہلوانی Pehlwani poetry of 'Legendary Heroes,' and the 'Gawal' as the main relaters of epic tales of Hazrat Ali a.s., Amir Hamza and Hazrat Suleiman a.s. for example; secondary relaters are dastaan sittings in households, and the third group are the elite literary gatherings where non-regional epic stories were also related such as the Shahnama, Hafiz and Maulana Rumi.

Danish also mentions the 'irfaani-mystical' poetry of 19th century writers as ملا فاضل Mullah Fazil (buried in Kech, Mund) and مستوکلی Mast Twakali (Marri Tribe - https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=771..., and discusses the character of Mir Chakar, ascribing three main roles to this iconic Baloch protagonist. The roles of 'Gohar' and 'Hani' are also mentioned. Danish Baloch reiterates that 'Baloch' means 'a nomad' and thus the nomadic lifestyle reflects through Baloch poetry.

Danish Baloch is a philosophy graduate from FC College with an interest in history, literature and the traditional arts.

    6. LINK مکالمہ بلوچستان | هزارگی لوک موسیقی | Hazargi Folk Music Performance - Live from Quetta Hosted by Shah Abdullah Alamee

Representing Balochistan's Hazara culture, the Do Taar Ensemble - Nasrullah Shida, Fareshta Reha, Liaqat Khan & Mehdi Foladi - present three Hazargi Folk Songs, celebrating the famed Hazargi musicians Abey Mirza and Sayed Anwar. After the performance, Shah Abdullah Alamee pays tribute to the artist Hassan Ali Hatif and his fine art gallery in Quetta, who introduced the art world to the Hazara community.

Shahabuddin Baloch gives insight into Date Fruit Orchards in Balochistan (and other parts of Pakistan) and the number of varieties that Pakistan is blessed with. Shahid Khan briefly mentions the work of Indus Earth Trust in Balochistan in building check dams and how that impacts cultivation.

    3. LINK مکالمہ بلوچستان | تحفظِ ثقافت | Heritage Conservation of Balochistan - Imran Shabir Baloch (Lecturer Archaeology, UoB)

      Respondents: Dr. Abdul Rehman

      Moderator: Syed Muhammad Mehdi

Audio-Visual by Saif Ullah, Balochistan: Land of Beauty (YouTube Channel)

Imran Shabbir begins the session with an overview of the archeological sites and work in Balochistan saying that it was foreign missions which led the study and excavation of such sites. The local residents he added do not give much relevance to the sites and its history. As a result the ancient sites of Mehergarh included are seen as as a means of earning foreign exchange and are not adequately protected or maintained. Imran Shabbir also identified 15 sites that require immediate attention.

Dr. Abdul Rehman mentions countless sites of importance in Balochistan's heritage that first need the protection of local like-minded residents, and ofcourse the relevant government departments. 4. LINK مکالمہ بلوچستان | ورثہ دورِ جدید میں | Heritage in Modernity - Saifullah Nasar

      Respondent: Dr. Amjad Waheed

      Moderator: Leenah Nasir

      Closing Remarks:

Taimoor Khan Mumtaz & Kamil Khan Mumtaz

      & Esteemed Panelists

Saif Nasar states that nothing today is outside of modernity, saying that even our own understanding of culture is affected by it. The very concept of ‘nation-state’ is within its parameters and that sadly it’s ‘static’ vision does not own tradition but its own narrative. He also points that the desire of the ‘diaspora’ to ‘identify themselves as modern’, and how modernity appropriates culture – as in music – and experiments with it. The rise of ‘mazhabi junooniat’ and tradition owned by ‘ethnic politics’ is also a ‘reaction’ to it.

Dr. Amjad Waheed continues the discussion saying that diversities is a traditional formation, while the British giving one constitution to all of Hindustan is a modernisttendency not a traditional mind-set. He said that further ethnographic, archaeological and anthropological studies are needed to understand the modernist phenomena in Balochistan better. Migration of labour, road networks, the ‘spell of technology’ in the past 20 years have all challenged culture. However, technology is also being used to promote culture. Talha Ali Kushvaha adds that corporate forces world view does not see ‘tradition’ as fitting their equation.

Kamil Khan Mumtaz defines culture as a phenomena which carries the entire history of mankind; Terming the pastoral life as the ‘norm’ and the modern-machine mode of production as ‘abnormal’.

“I grew up watching my maternal uncle playing the sarod. We lived in Sindh at the time. I liked the sound so I started playing it at the age of about nine. Seeing my enthusiasm my uncle started teaching me. After his death in 1970, Zaaro a singer who was a friend of my uncle, encouraged me and took me to Radio Pakistan Quetta for a performance. Unfortunately, he too died in 1980. By now I had made a name for myself and a famous singer Mureed Balodi and I teamed up, and we became quite popular.

Peoples, Cultures & Languages of Pakistan

Objective:

‘And be you not like those who forgot Allah, and He made them forget their own selves!...’

Quran- 59:19

Pakistan is heir to very rich artistic, intellectual, spiritual and literary traditions which are for the most part absent from mainstream education. Similarly we are a multi-cultural, multi-religious, multi-lingual society, but alas this diversity is again totally missing from our societal and educational discourse.

Coupled with the above glaring gaps in our societal and educational discourse, is the presence in Pakistani society of what can perhaps best be described as an uneasy intersection between the two currents of Modernity and Tradition or the Colonial and the Pre-colonial.

Peoples, Cultures & Languages of Pakistan focuses on Pakistan’s rich human and cultural landscape, which is necessary not only for any individual Pakistani's self-understanding and self-worth but also a pre-requisite for formulating a meaningful course for the future for the nation as a whole.

  • Objective:

‘And be you not like those who forgot Allah, and He made them forget their own selves!...’

    Quran- 59:19

Pakistan is heir to very rich artistic, intellectual, spiritual and literary traditions which are for the most part absent from mainstream education. Similarly we are a multi-cultural, multi-religious, multi-lingual society, but alas this diversity is again totally missing from our societal and educational discourse.

The first element – the artistic & intellectual heritage – was sacrificed at the altar of ‘progress’ and ‘development’. While the second diversity was sacrificed at the altar of ‘nationalism’, forgetting that no nation can be built on a root-less and solely ‘functional’ education and that the real strength of a ‘federation’ is in the strength of its federating units.

Coupled with the above glaring gaps in our societal and educational discourse, is the presence in Pakistani society of what can perhaps best be described as an uneasy intersection between the two currents of Modernity and Tradition or the Colonial and the Pre-colonial.

The tensions generated between these often competing currents and the accompanying crisis of identity which we face as a nation is, to a great extent, a result of being ill-informed of the deeper philosophical and epistemological underpinnings of both Modernity and Tradition and ignorance of our human, cultural, artistic & intellectual heritage.

Peoples, Cultures & Languages of Pakistan focuses on Pakistan’s rich human and cultural landscape, which is necessary not only for any individual Pakistani's self-understanding and self-worth but also a pre-requisite for formulating a meaningful course for the future for the nation as a whole.

"My doctoral training and research interests have spanned over five centuries of South Asian history, with a particular, though not exclusive, focus on South Asian Islam in the global context. I examine the links between religion, secularism, and decolonization by way of the lives and writings of South Asian intellectuals whose primary language was Urdu. This intelligentsia was particularly influential and involved in progressive cultural movements that were at once, anti-colonial, left-leaning, and which cross-cut minoritarian Indo-Muslim politics. As a cultural historian, I am particularly interested in understanding what we might learn from texts not traditionally considered part of official archives, such as literature and cinema."
