Dr. Noman Ahmed | An architect and planner by profession, he has worked as a Faculty Member and Coordinator, Urban Design Graduate Programme at the Dawood College of Engineering and Technology, Karachi from 1989 to 2000. Thereafter he founded an Architecture and Planning Department at the NED University of Engineering and Technology, Karachi in 2000. Obaid ur Rehman | Born in Karachi, Obaid ur Rehman is the 3rd generation of the pioneers of handloom weavers in Pakistan (Hilal Silk Palace, linked to the weavers of Banaras Colony). His family migrated to Pakistan during Partition.

 

Javed Chauhan | A Master Mason whose family has been in Karachi for over 200 years, and have been part of the building of renowned Karachi structures.

 

Arif Hasan | An architect and planner, activist, teacher, social researcher, writer and former IIED-Fellow. He studied architecture at the Oxford Polytechnic, worked in Europe in architect’s offices, and on his return to Karachi in 1968, established an independent practice which slowly evolved into dealing with national and international urban planning and development issues. Masooma LotiaBorn not long after Partition in a Bohra trading family from Bhuj, Kutch, Gujrat, that came to Karachi approximately two centuries ago, Masuma is a seventh generation Karachiite. She credits her mother for their shared love of music and is eternally grateful to Mr. Abul Hasanat Qureshi, her master sahib,  for his patience  and perseverance in instilling a lasting  appreciation of Urdu poetry in a reluctant learner. Her father’s genes ensured the desire to follow in his footsteps and after initially working in the family business, independent entrepreneurship seemed a natural progression. Her work experience includes textiles and food processing which extended to involvement in Technical and Vocational Training projects in the public sector with particular focus on women’s education and training.

 

Masuma collaborated on a pilot project for the revival of natural Indigo dye and continues to hope that she will see it become a sustainable exercise. Besides continuing to working actively, she volunteers on the Board of two inner city community schools and most of all loves spending time with her grandchildren.

Farishta Dinshaw |  Farishta Murzban Dinshaw is an Adjunct Professor with the graduate programs in Immigration and Settlement, and Criminology and Social Justice at Ryerson University, Toronto. Her interest in Zarathushti history and religion began at age fifteen when she started volunteering at the Friday School for Little Zarathushtis, Karachi.  She enjoys writing and has an eclectic collection of publications to her name such as a young adult novel, “Discovering Ashavan”. She is a regular contributor to Zoroastrian community journals and is the assistant editor of Fezana Journal, a quarterly publication of the Federation of Zoroastrian Associations of North America. She has also presented about Zarathushti faith and heritage at conferences and interfaith events, including the World’s Religions after September 11 Congress and the Parliament of World Religions | www.fezana.org

 

Zeenat Kausar Lakhani | Member of the Memon community, an educationalist, author, poet and essayist in the Urdu language, Zeenat Lakhani has been associated with various educational to develop Character and Moral building interactive books for the youth. There is a need in the market organizations like Aga Khan Education Services, & Educators Network Schools. She has three published books, 'Man Ka Ban', 'Mata -e- Jan' and ‘Ayena -e- Guftar.’ She is now leveraging on her life experience for such books as the youth of today need to morally lead us into the future with high character.

Dr. Zeba Ashraf PhD Scholar. Educationist. Counselor. Human Resource development trainer. Social worker. Subject of Research: History of the Memon community and its contribution towards the socio-economic development of Pakistan; 1947 - 1971. The topic encompasses the community’s economic transition as traders and merchants to industrialists. It also highlights the social aspect of philanthropy in healthcare, education and skill development in British India and independent Pakistan. Currently working on several other community projects. Special efforts are being made to save the Memoni language from extinction. 

 

Natasha Mavalvala | Zoroastrian Hymns | A mother of three and working for Saudi Arabian Airlines for the last 37 years.  Apart from work she is on four different community committees and volunteers at the local Parsi hospital from time to time.  Loves travelling and interacting with people of different nations.  She also makes Torans, a traditional Parsi art of weaving glass beads into a pattern and which adorn practically every Parsi home worldwide.

 

Riaz Kamlani | Executive Vice President at The Citizens Foundation, Riaz had been associated with TCF since 2008. Prior to the non-profit sector, he served in senior management roles with Shell International in Pakistan, United Kingdom, South Africa and the UAE. He also served as the Chief Executive Officer of Sina Trust in Karachi, where he managed the organisation’s not-for-profit network of primary healthcare clinics in less-privileged communities.

As an architectural historian she harbors keen interest in exploring the built heritage of  Pakistan, this she furthered by her focused doctoral study on the architecture of Makli  Necropolis, Thatta. As an academician she endeavors to fuse her two passions, history and  teaching, by refocusing the architectural history pedagogy towards the study of local built  heritage.

Dr. Ali Lajwani | Dr. Ali Lajwani belongs to small town Bhitshah, District Matiari, Sindh, Pakistan.. Dr. Ali Lajwani Ph.D. (Sociology) – research topic “An Analysis of Social Values and Traditions of Sindh Society. His research papers are widely circulated through academia for reading among the international communities. He is the author of five books in Sindhi and English, including the “Shah-Jo-Risalo”. The indigenous and treasured information was added in “Shah-Jo-Risalo” regarding Sufi-music familiarly known as “Shah-Jo-Raag”.

Dr. Lajwani is working as an Assistant Professor at the University of Sufism and Modern Sciences (USMS) Bhitshah. He has been teaching the subject of Sociology, Sufism, Cultural Studies, Sindhi, and Research Methodology. He possesses nineteen years of experience in the development sector & teaching, networking with national and international institutions as well.

Dr. Fehmida Hussain | Sindhi Language Authority & University of Karachi A prolific writer who has more than fifteen books to her credit along with several research articles on the subjects of literary criticism, linguistics with special reference to different aspects of Sindhi language, poetry of Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai, and gender issues. She has been writing columns, articles, and critiques in various newspapers and magazines for the last forty years. Dr Fahmida Hussain is former Chairperson, Sindhi Language Authority; former Director of Shah Abdul Latif Chair, University of Karachi for ten years; and has also served as Professor and Chairperson of the Department of Sindhi in the same university.

Dr. Sher Mehrani | Assistant Professor at the University of Karachi in the Sindhi Department. He is PhD and double masters. He has conducted many conferences, seminars and presented research papers at National and international level. He is a scholar of the Sindhi language, of the poetry of Shah Abdul Lateef Bhittai, Mysticism, Modern literature and critics. 

He is author of the 10 Books and 30 Research articles. Major work includes: Aestheticism in the poetry of Shah Lateef; Critical Analysis of Research held over Shah Lateef ; Translation of the Poetics by Aristotle Bequest of Bhittai.

 

He was awarded with the Shah Lateef Award in 2018 (The Biggest Award on Literature) by the Government of Sindh, Shah Lateef Tassawuf Award by Pakistan Academy of letters Islamabad in 2013 and Global CSR Award 2021.

 

Dr. Zulfiqar Ali Kalhoro | Currently working at the Development Studies, Pakistan Institute of Development Economics, Zulfiqar Kalhoro does research in Historical Anthropology and Cultural Anthropology. Doctoral Dissertation: History and Architecture of the Kalhoras in Sindh (1580-1783). He has published in various national & international journals and is the author of 9 books on culture and heritage including:

Amar Jaleel | Kazi Abdul Jaleel, born 1936 in Rohri, popularly known as Amar Jaleel, is a Sindhi fiction writer and a Columnist whose columns appear in various Sindhi, Urdu and English-language dailies of Pakistan. He has authored 20 books, and received awards including Pride of Performance (Pakistan), and Akhal Bharat Sindhi Sahat Sabha National Award (India) Sindhi Fiction Writer & Columnist.

Dr. Ghazala Rahman | Ghazala is an educations and social reformer from Karachi, Sindh who studied in U.S.A. completing a Ph.D. in UC Santa Barbara. After her experience abroad Ghazala came back to Karachi and founded the Sindh Abhyas Academy at Szabist, an Institute offering an all rounded education regarding Sindh, with courses dedicated to undergraduates and graduates regarding its history, geography, culture, economics, anthropology and philosophy. Ghazala is today the director of the Academy and we met her during our trip in Sindh, Pakistan.

 

Ajay Pinjani | Senior Manager MTB-MLE (Mother Tongue based Multilingual Education) and Learning and Assessment Design at The Citizens Foundation, Pakistan.
